Working at the Halewood Animal Centre

Working at Halewood The Halewood Animal Centre is situated on Higher Road, Halewood, approximately 7 miles from the City Centre. It is quite difficult to reach by public transport. The nearest railway station is Halewood Station, near to Leathers Lane, about 1 mile from the Centre. The 78 and 75 bus service go as far as Leathers Lane, there is then about a 5/10 minute walk to the Centre. We therefore tend to recruit from people living in the Halewood, Hunts Cross and Garston areas or people with their own transport. The Animal Centre is one of the largest and busiest Centres in England and Wales. We take in approximately 4,000 dogs, 2,000 cats and 1,000 other small mammals and birds each year. As we take in strays the work can be quite upsetting.

Working at the Centre can be noisy, smelly and dangerous. It can also be rewarding with a real sense of Job satisfaction, particularly when you see a dog or cat that you have been looking after going home with new owners.

You need to be over 16 with a real love of animals. We get lots of spec letters and cv’s every week and it helps if you have experience of working with domestic animals and have an NVQ Level II in Small Animal Care.

You will also need to be able to work a rota including most weekends and public holidays including Christmas and New Year and you must be able to get to Halewood for a 9.00 a.m. start. If you have worked as a volunteer dog walker it can help as you will know what the Centre is like and we will know you too.

You will need to be physically fit – although we can accommodate a fair range of disabilities – reliable, trustworthy and confident with people as well as animals.

You will need to know that because we take in strays the public can be angry and upset at having to pay a council fine to get their pet back. You should also be aware that because we take in strays there are times when we have to put unfit animals to sleep. This can be upsetting for all concerned.

In return we offer a good rate of pay, a final salary pension scheme and full protective clothing. There are opportunities for promotion and for training to NVQ II in appropriate cases.

We rarely advertise so you should send a letter or c.v. to the Secretary at 19 Tapton Way, Wavertree Technology Park,LIVERPOOL, L13 1DA. Your application will be acknowledged and details kept on file. In some cases you may be invited for an informal chat about your background and experience.
